Adult Diapers - Introductory Information

An
adult diaper is an absorbent diaper made to be worn by people larger than toddlers and includes youth or teen sizes up to bariatric 3XL sizes. Diapers can be necessary for adults who are incontinent for different reasons, such as mobility impairment, cognitive impairment, severe diarrhea, dementia. Adult diapers are made in various styles, including those resembling traditional child diapers (attached with side tabs), underpants (protective underwear, pull ups or pull ons), and pads resembling sanitary napkins (known as incontinence pads or bladder control pads). Super absorbent polymer is primarily used in Adult Diapers to absorb bodily wastes and liquids. Alternative terms such as "Adult briefs" or "incontinence products & supplies" are also used.

Many people with urinary incontinence rely on Adult Diaper products like pads, guards, briefs and protective coverings to manage urine loss. If other treatments don’t provide a complete cure, Adult Diaper products offer a measure of security to allow life to be lived to its fullest. There are multiple types of Adult Diaper products to choose from and many things to consider when deciding which is right for you. Individuals come in all shapes and sizes, have different lifestyles and a wide range of symptoms. A person who is very mobile may prefer a
pull up underwear style Adult Diaper. Someone who is not mobile at all may need the tab style adult diaper ( similar to a children’s diaper). If you are a caregiver changing someone else's diaper it is almost always easier to use the tab style adult diaper. A person with milder symptoms will require a lower absorbent Adult Diaper than someone whose incontinence is more severe. A single product may not meet all your needs. For example, you might want to wear an extra absorbent Adult Diaper if you suffer from heavy leakage at night, but may manage with a less absorbent adult pull up or Bladder Control Pad during the day.

If even overnight extra absorbent diapers don’t offer sufficient protection, you may consider adding a booster pad inside the adult diaper. Do not ever “double up” on adult diapers (put on 2 pairs at the same time) as the waterproof backing on the one will prevent the second one from working. Only use products designed for that purpose, such as booster pads. Some people will use underpads or bed pads (chair pads) to protect mattresses and furniture in case of accidental leakage. There are various creams and cleansers available to help prevent chafing and adult diaper rash.
